Terms of Use

Last updated: October 28, 2026

These Terms govern your use of the States University platform and its online courses and certificate services. By accessing the platform, enrolling in a course, requesting a certificate or verifying a credential, you agree to these Terms. States University offers non-credit continuing-education courses and is not an accredited degree-granting institution. If you do not agree with any part of these Terms, do not use the platform or request a certificate.

1. About the platform

States University is a private online continuing-education platform operated by States University that offers non-credit courses, 100% online, and issues, records and verifies online the corresponding certificates. States University is not an accredited degree-granting institution. It does not award academic degrees or college credit, and the word “University” in its name does not indicate any academic status.

2. Scope of the services

The services include: (a) non-credit online courses and study materials; (b) assessment of users who complete a course, through a final assessment exam; (c) issuance of certificates with a unique registry number, QR code and security features; (d) a verifiable record of the certificates issued; (e) free and open certificate verification; and (f) digital credentials that the certificate holder can share.

3. What a certificate is and is not

Each certificate is a private certificate of completion issued by States University. It documents that the certificate holder completed the course and achieved a passing result on a final assessment exam under the methodology of the platform, and it can be verified online by QR code and registry number.

A certificate is not an academic degree or diploma, does not carry college credit, is not recognized by any education authority and does not confer a license to practice any regulated profession. Acceptance is at the discretion of each employer or institution. The full conditions of issuance are set out in the Certificate Issuance and Use Terms.

4. Eligibility and user responsibilities

The platform is not directed to children under 13, and children under 13 may not use it or request a certificate. Issuance of a certificate requires the certificate holder to provide accurate, complete and current information (such as full name, email address, ID number and date of birth). The certificate is issued on the basis of that information, which identifies the certificate holder unambiguously in the record.

The user is responsible for the accuracy of the information provided. False statements, use of another person’s identity or cheating on an assessment result in the revocation of the certificate (Section 9), without prejudice to any other measures that may apply.

5. Online verification and record

A certificate is verified by an exact search for the certificate number (or by the QR code printed on the document) on the verification page. The record is not a directory of people: the certificate holder’s personal information is shown publicly only with the holder’s consent, through a publishing option that the holder turns on. Certificates are private by default, and the certificate holder can make a credential public or private at any time.

6. API issuance for partners

Partner organizations may issue certificates through the platform API once access has been enabled, using their own access credentials. The partner is responsible for the accuracy of the data submitted for issuance and for having a lawful basis to transmit it, and must keep its API credentials confidential. States University may suspend a partner’s access in the event of misuse, fraud or breach of these Terms.

7. Intellectual property

The certificate templates, seals, security patterns, credentials, brand and design of States University are owned by or licensed to States University and may not be copied, modified or used to create documents outside the platform. The certificate holder may display, print and share the certificate and credential issued in the holder’s name, provided that the holder does not alter its content, number, QR code or security features.

8. Acceptable use

The user agrees not to use the platform for unlawful purposes; not to attempt to bypass assessments or security mechanisms; not to forge, alter or issue certificates in the name of others without authorization; and not to extract data from the record by automated means without authorization.

9. Revocation of certificates

States University may revoke a certificate upon finding cheating on an assessment, false information at issuance, alteration of the document, breach of these Terms or a material error in issuance. A certificate may also be invalidated after a refund or chargeback of the related purchase, as described in the Certificate Issuance and Use Terms. A revoked or invalidated certificate is no longer verifiable as active, and the verification page shows its status. When possible, the certificate holder is notified at the email address on record.

10. Privacy and personal information

The processing of personal information is described in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms. Requests to correct or delete personal information, or to make a certificate private, can be made on the data deletion and correction page.

11. Limitation of liability

A certificate documents the course completion and the passing exam result verified on the date of issuance, according to the methodology of the platform. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, States University and States University are not liable for professional outcomes, hiring decisions, decisions of third parties based on a certificate, or any indirect, incidental or consequential damages arising from the use of the platform. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability or consumer right that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

12. Changes

These Terms may be updated at any time. The version in effect is always the one published on this page, with the last-updated date shown at the top. The English version is the only version of these Terms.

13. Governing law and jurisdiction

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. Any rights that the consumer protection or privacy laws of the user’s state of residence make non-waivable remain fully applicable and prevail over any provision of these Terms that conflicts with them.
